I was wondering if hamsters do actually attempt to clean themselves when they have "wet tail"? Or does it not want to because of the foul smell or because that's a symptom of the disease? I'm bringing my hamster back to the pet store tomorrow because i just recently bought it and it has all the symptoms of wet tail disease. I tried to wipe his butt with a wet napkin but it seems to be too dried up.

Even if they could clean themselves, it probably wouldn't do them much good. Part of the problem is a bacterial infection/imbalance. If they tried to clean themselves, they'd just reinfect themselves while doing it. Maybe that's why it has such a bad smell! http://www.petwebsite.com/hamsters/hamster_wet_tail.htm

Alot of people think wet tail in hamsters is just diarrhea, and that you can make it better by cutting out fruit and veg from his diet...
BUT wet tail is really caused by a severe bacterial infection in the intestines, and is almost always fatal if not treated with antibiotics as soon as possible after symptoms appear.
If you bring your hamster back to the pet store, chances are he'll die - I'm not sure if the pet store people would take the trouble to get him to a vet or give him the medicine he needs.
Why don't you try taking him to the vet - maybe he still has a chance to get better? Just tell your vet over the phone that your hamster has wet tail, and I'm sure he or she would know what to do. The main thing is to get him treated as soon as possible.
Good luck!

Wet-tail also has other things that make the hamster very sick such as dihdrationa and probably stomach aches. If it has any signs of wet tail take it back to the store immidiatly. They will take it and put it in a special little cage in the back and if it gets better they will put it back up for sale or they might give it back to you but hamsters normally do not do good with wet tail and some end up dying from it.
Hope your hamster is ok.
Good luck

My recommendation is bring it to a vet. Wet tail is like having runs for human. Your hamster will be very tired having having wet tail.

I'm one of the lucky ones i guess. When my hamster suffer from wet tail, I stop giving it cabbages but replace with fruits and those high fibre food. The water bottle which i also add vitamins (NOTE: pet vitamins not human vitamins) into it helps also, i guess. My hamster recover after 1 week of wet tail.
