I have PCOS and i was wondering if any women out there have it and what they use to treat it. I have been doing lots of research on metiformin and i want to use it but im scared that it will only work for a short time. I hate using the pill but i really need to get my period more often. What do you use?

Im not trying to be rude but unless you have it you couldnt possibly know what the best treatment is. Metformin is a good treatment but also for some women it dont work very long. I want to have children some day and i dont want to use up all the options of doing that right away. My doctor told me in my case that if i was on metformin i would be like a normal fertile woman thats great but i dont want to jump the gun use it now and then not be able to use it when i want to have children. In this case i only want personal exprience not somethign you read on a site cause unless you walked in our footsteps you couldnt possilbe understand! thanks though

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago. I was on the pill and metformin. The metformin is really to fix the excess insulin in your system from insulin resistence which goes hand in hand with PCOS. Unfortunately for me, these things didn't help my problem. They reduced the insulin and regulated my period, however I then had to take higher mg pill and eventually was on 50mgs twice a day. I now have a mirena iud. My PCOS is controlled, I haven't had a flare up for ages. A good way to control it with out medication, is to lose weight. I'm not sayong your fat or anything, it's what I've learned through my experience. A low gi diet is the best as the foods that you are eating, are absorbing the excess insulin and a bit of light exercise aids in the weight loss. Good luck, and if you want to know anything else, feel free to email me!!

PCOS is the number one cause of female infertility. However, it is treatable and it is possible to get pregnant. The best treatment is metformin. It is meant to be stayed on. Not like take it and it corrects the problem..and then you're OK. PCOS is not curable but can be controlled with the correct treatment. Metformin combined with a low carb diet and exericise. Here's some general PCOS info and links for you. Good luck.

I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment.

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.

4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.

There are TONS of books about PCOS and dieting. There are two that I recommend. Here's the links at amazon for those:

I have PCOS as well. My gyn also put me on the pill which I have been on for fourteen years. I don't ovulate nor have normal periods. I never have. I have been on the low-dose pills for seven years.

The pill only treats the symptoms, but does not treat PCOS.

I, too, am unsure about using the PCOS treatments like metiformin or glucophage through an Endocrinologist. One reason is I am 44 years old and just started perimenopause in April 2006. I'm not sure if I should pursue the treatment. It may be too late for me. I don't know.

PCOS treatment; IUI, ICSI and Laparoscopic surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Fly2india4health Consultants. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients, as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS.

They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of Healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment; IUI surgery done there and she is more than very happy with the results. She is all praise for Fly2india4health Consultants. She paid just 20% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her. Hope this helps
