I thought that it usually came on after it heated to the proper temperature, but before the heating cycle shut off completely.

Here are some more details that might help. The furnace(heating cycle) comes on and will shut off. The blower then comes on. While the blower is still on, the furnace will come back on for about a min and turn back off. The blower continues running til it's cooled back off. I hope I haven't confused anyone. This is my first winter with an oil furnace and I'm not sure about it. Landlord and husband say it's fine. I just want to know for sure. Thanks.

Yes i is OK because the furnace is made of heavy Gage steel. The fan will cool down the furnace than it turns off, but if the sensor worms up again, the fan will turn on to continue to cool down the furnace.

Carrie P could be right, also, the high or low thermostats for the fan may be off and need readjustment. This should be checked.
