Not quite. We take pride in telling that we're united to outsiders but not quite so in reality. Marriages still take place predominantely inside one's caste creed etc. People show comtempt toward a section below them and envy those above them. The North East people prefer to come to Hyderabad (where I live) and Bangalore to study and not to Delhi/Mumbai etc because they say they're discriminated. People there call them 'ching chang choo'. It hurts them. Fair Mumbaikars call Dark skinned south indians as 'Madrasis'. Muslims have their own personal law and dont share the Justice system as every one else does. Anglo Indians Identify themselves more with the English than the Indians. Shameful though but my own Telugu people fight among themselves for regions, water sharing, state economy, government jobs (I'm talking about the Andhra-Telangana dispute). The list goes on. India has become a country where a person should shut up and live even the slightest provocation can result in shameful incidents like Godhra etc.

PS. We South Indians are simply not comfortable with Hindi. In the North, most languages are written in Devenagiri and so northies are more comfortable with hindi. Would 'Ni' be comfortable learning Tamil? Northies make fun of us when we even attempt to speak hindi with the motive of learning it. When all government documents in New Delhi are printed in English, how does one superficially brand Hindi as National?

Indians are not united at all. Most of the hindi speaking states discriminate against other smaller states. Racial discrimination is rampant in India. People from the south and north-east of India faces racial slurs all the time whenever they visit Hindi speaking states. It's quite sad that mainland Indians doesn't even consider north-easterners as Indian becoz of their features, even though most of them died fighting for India during the Kargil war. I blame mostly the media and the government of India for this state of division among Indians. The govt doesn't want the north-eastern states to develop and the media doesn't give a damn about the happenings in the region. I think, "information" and "education" is the need of the hour to bring Indians together irrespective of their caste, creed or the colour of the skin. The media should play the lead role here. Instead of giving useless information like 'the colour of Salman's underwear or how Laloo Yadav caught a cold'. They should concentrate more on the relevant subjects and try to bring Indians together by giving information about each other. And the Govt of India should stop treating the south Indians and the north-easterners as adopted children.

Hi All ..
Indians are united in celebration (when India wins a cricket match) or in calamity (meaning dire need). To be honest we can't expect Indians to be united because Indians are classified on the basis of religion, caste, regionalism, language, etc. etc. There is so much of diversity in this country and therefore to break these barriers and unify Indians is not going to be easy unless God himself finds a way. Whatever unity we find today is because of one person - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. And someone very recently mimicked him to be a pole dancer !! Time for all of us to think and think aloud.

Just wait for your current south Indian g/f to dump you, then we will see how much humorous you find south indians to be :P just kidding about the above statement,of course we all hope and pray that such day never comes and you remain glued to each other like fevicol kaa jod. I think you are being subjective ,those seductive love chemicals in your brain have created a kind of chemical locha and you are being blinded towards reality and facts. I agree with kandy ,It just depends on the person, nothing else! :D there are people with amazing wit and humor from both parts of india ,so very hard to say who is better and it is also a question of preference for certain kind of humor .Some might prefer South Indians over North Indians and vice- versa. btw where does that leave people from western part of India ,like ones from mumbai and rest of west India.

Indians have all sorts of differences like Religion, Community, Caste, Language, social status etc. among themselves. But when an outsiders try to intervene, all the Indians unite themselves as a single force to oppose them.

Of course India is not united. Look at the North Eastern states of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram and the others. They are fighting for independence. Why? Not because of any race, religion or colour factor; it's simple economics. While the rest of India (some parts) is seeing an economic boom, dreaming of becoming a super power, basking in wealth, these states are neglected to the extreme. The health facilities, infrastructure, educational facilities and all are poor. These states remain under-developed to the hilt. That is why they want to break away from the rest of India. They are rich in resources, bur cannot enjoy the fruit of these resources.

Indians unite in national crisis only. They are the most disunited lot under normal circumstances. Caste plays the greatest divisive role. This is followed by regional bias.
Language also creates bias/fissure rather than unite. Politicians have learned to exploit these drawbacks and gain from them during the election. It is a well-known fad: “Beti aur vote apne jaat ko hi dunga”(I will give my daughter and vote to my caste).
Three erstwhile chief ministers have been solely the product of this. You have 30% or so ministers in the central cabinet who are die hard product of this system.

indians are meant to be united but they have raised up events for di\scrimination they have started to compare between north and south indian and to be frank it doest sound funny like the norht indians immitating their accent and their aility to speak hindi at lest they should be happy we are able to speak something besies our mother tongue and i a afraid clor discrimination has been aroused because the fair ppl tend to keep away from the dark anda ll that i mean if we strt differentiating between ourselves so will the foreigners and i think thats the only reason for racist comments from outsidplaces lik the recent example of shilipa shetty in BIG BROTHER because if we can comment of the people of our country why cant they

If hope if you look at the past few incidents like tsunami, gujarat earthquakes, gujarat and maharashtra floods, Kargil war, and above all the series bomb blasts in Mumbai you will find the answers.

We all co-operated and did as much as we can to aid people affect by floods, earthquake and tsunami. The whole country saluted mumbaites for recovering from the massive attack pretty fast. The whole city co-operated with each other during the poeriod. We all gathered up and motivated our soldiers fight for us in the borders. We all celebrated the kargil victory. Isn't that a sense of unity amongst us?

:-)
