Is sixteen too young to know that I'm a lesbian? I've pretty much known since I was like, five, but I hear from some people that you don't know until you're like eighteen. I've been told that I'm too young to know, but seriously, I've felt this way my whole life.

Oh yeah, and not to be disrespectful to butch girls, but I don't even "look" gay at all. I'm lipstick all the way. That's another reason she says I'm just going through a phase. I just wanted you to confirm it.

Short answer: if you're attracted to women (and not men), you're a lesbian. No, you don't have to wait until you are eighteen. The age of majority is not some magic number that allows to see things more clearly. Whoever has told you that you are "too young to know" is being disrespectful.

Long answer: of course, Lesbian as an identity is more complicated than simple attraction to women. It is, like all identity categories, a construction of our particular culture/society. Being a lesbian means identifying with a particular community, set of behaviors, etc. If you consider yourself a lesbian, go for it.

adolescents is a time of unsurety. Some or most teens go through a period where they question their sexuality. Some have known for a long time they were gay or some are just discovering what exactly these feelings are. There's no set date when you're supposed to know your sexual orientation. If you are attracted to other girls and you feel that they are who you want to be with sexually and emotionally then you're probably a lesbian. If you feel the connection with guys and feel the hots for them well then you're probably straight. But you said you pretty much known since you were 5. I think you already know the answer. if you feel that way your whole life, then you're a lesbian. But don't discount liking guys either. I just got to say this..... You never know.

I know several friends who have felt they knew they were gay since kindergarten, too. It's not that unusual, though I know a lot more who are just discovering.

Whoever told you that "you're too young", then ask them if a straight person your age is "too young" to know. Also ask why eighteen is the magic number of knowledge. It's not like at 18 a little light goes off and reveals your entire nature to yourself. I know a friend who just came out at 23, so age shouldn't be the deciding issue.

As long as you do what you believe is right and what feels good, then it can't be wrong.

I've always known, well at least since I actually understood the difference between homosexual and heterosexual. That was a little wake up call to why I never, ever liked guys!! Don't worry about people telling you you're too young to know or trying to convince you you're going through a stage. You are going to feel how you feel no matter what they say. Maybe it is just a stage, that doesn't make your feelings now any less valid. BTW, I'm not saying it is a stage, just trying to make a point. Good luck.

No, sixteen isn't too young... there is no magic age, and if you're sure you're a lesbian, then that's all there is to it!

Also, there is no problem with you being femme. Society tends to think that if you are a lesbian you have to be butch, but that is simply not the case. There are many femme lesbians.

When I hear people talk about when they "knew" that they were gay, most of them knew is middle school. I don't think society can tell you that you won't know your own feelings until you are eighteen. You are what you are, you feel what you feel, it's that simple. Just love yourself for who you are and have faith that everything will work out.

no, I don't think you are too young. I was confused as a teenager. I didn't know anyone gay or lesbian growing up...so, I had no one to talk to about it...no one to confide in. I didn't "come out" to myself until I was 18...but, looking back, I know I was never attracted to men, only women.

People are probably saying you are too young to discourage you from what you feel in your heart. In the end though, it your own heart and your life. So, do not listen to them. They think they know what is right for you but only you can answer that question. Good luck. ;)

Congratulations you sound like you know you're a lesbian and you seem to be taking it well. A lot of people go throught a lot of tough times before they can admit it to themself --that's why they don't 'know' until later in life.
