Yeah, that Hawaii joke is funny.
Japanese jokes are very 'different' to the American ones.
American jokes tend to be mocking/making fun of someone (come on, dont deny it!)
Here is a popular Japanese joke - it took me so long to figure out, no one ever told me why it was funny, (much like our 'why did the chicken cross the road' jokes)
"futon ga futonda"
I put it in romanji so everyone can read.
'a futon is a futon'
but it also is a play on words (like most japanese jokes)
mean the futon jumped.
its cute and silly.
*warning* most Japanese who have had little influence with western culture do NOT know sarcasim. They simply do not understand it. If you are in a snow storm and you say "wow, its good weather huh" the japanese will say "no its not, its terrible weather!!" they simply dont get thats its sarcasm.
Here is another joke I used alot - great with kids.
They ALWAYS! ALWAYS! ask "nanijin desu ka?"
"what nationality are you?"
then I say "ashi wa nanbon desu ka?"
("how many legs do I have?")
and they say "nihon" (it means 2 legs & Japanese)
and I say, "sou deshou, watashi wa nihonjin desu yo!"
"See, Im Japanese!"
I told this to a group of kids who were laughing their heads off when I said this one, and another of their friends came along and they all jumped on him and says "He said he has 2 LEGS!!" HAHAHAHA But the other kid didnt know the joke so he thought his friends were nuts, and he was like 'yeah, 2 legs, so what?'
okay, had to be there.
So you see most of the Japanese jokes are a play on words.

I once asked a Japanese friend to tell me a joke and he said:
Doitsu wa doitsu
This is a "cute" joke, I suppose, because "doitsu" means both "who" and "Germany", so it's a play on words: "Who (what sounds better) is Germany"
I know it's not "haha" funny, but like I said, it's a play on words!
if you mean American jokes that make fun of the Japanese.... Well, those tend to be racist...
