well, I have heard of it done by using a plain white tea shirt and knotting and twisting it and then submersing it into a pot of boiling water that has the dye color of choice. Afterwords, the bands should be taken off and there will be areas of white that streak through the colored areas. I think it is also important to rinse thoroughly in cold water before drying.
