Hi I'm trying to decide where to study abroad next year. Right now I'm in between choosing a school in Denmark or Rome. As a college student my housing will be taken care of by my parents. What concerns me is how much an average meal would cost for lunch, dinner and well the night life. How much is the average beer at a bar at each, the average cover charge?

Finally how much do you think I would have to bring with me to survive in each country. Thanks alot.

I have never been to Rome, so I hope someone else will give you the specifics of prices there. I am from Denmark, and will give you relevant prices for Denmark.

I would say the average beer, 500 ml approximately a pint, is 40 Danish Kroner or 7 US$. And the average cover charge for a night club is probably 50 Danish Kroner or 9 US$ - but it really depends what you are looking for. A lot of bars are free, while others may be free until midnight, and others will charge more - especially if there is live music. If you are a student you will hang out with other students - who never have a lot of money available - and a night in town will probably cost you 300 Danish Kroner (52 US$). Almost all educations in Denmark have the socalled "friday-bar", which is on every friday from about 2 pm to 6 pm, where you hang out with your fellow students in one of the common areas of your college. Beers at a "friday-bar" are cheap - about 1 US $. As a student it is also customary to hang out in groups in each others places on friday and saturday nights, before you hit town about 11 pm. You will do most of the alcohol-consumption before you go out to town - very cheap.

Lunch and dinner can be made very cheap - as long as you make your own out of inexpensive ingredients, and don't give in to the temptation of fast food. You don't need more than 50 DKr / 9 US$ a day on food.

You will be able to survive on 36.000 Danish Kroner (6250 US$ in the year - as long as you remember that you are a student, and have to watch your pennies. (Your parents will pay about 2.500 Danish Kroner or 430 US$ per month for a modest student room).

Have fun!

Expect to pay more for the tuition, about two times more than you would pay where you area. It depends on where you go. The Euro is worth more than the USD (for the correct exchange rate, look at this website: http://www.xe.com). I haven't been to these places, but I did study in Spain, there were some places that had beer for 1.30 € (Euro), some places had mixed drinks (for a liter) for 2.00 €, it really depends on the place you go to. But in the USA you are supposed to tip the person who serves you, well they don't do that in Spain at least, so that is why it may seem a little more to you. Generally if you are going to the university, you could decide to live with a family which then all your meals would be covered with your university fees, or if you are deciding to living on your own then you would have to go to the store and/or restaurants. Fast food places were generally a little more expensive than the USA. For example, some meals were 7€ whereas here they would be around 5 USD. Therefore, you may as well just go to the store there and buy your own food to make your own meals, live with a family so that you can have food provided, or see if is possible to eat at the university.

Pablo

I went to high school in Denmark and then later university in Austria. I've travelled and worked in Europe. My sense is that Italy would be a bit cheaper for a student than Denmark. I am not up on student prices for meals but just going by my work travel in both.

If it were me, I'd want to study in Rome...

I got engaged there and it is true: once you've been there, you long to go back...it is so true...i predict your time in Rome would be magical whereas Denmark is just....Denmark...

Do your research before deciding :)

Good luck!
