i usually give the answer with an explanation of why that is the answer or how i learned it. since i am a teacher i think it is ok if people learn the answer from me. the important thing is that they understand why that is the right answer. so usually i also put the background of why i picked that answer.

It depends, but it's usually a bit of both. I try to guess (from the question) if the asker is really trying to learn something or if he's desperately looking for the answer so he won't fail 9th grade algebra.
If it's the second, I'll give him the answer hidden within the explanation. For instance, given a question about how to factor polynomials I might talk more about the factoring techniques involved than their application. Then, in the end, I'll give him the factorization while explaining how each step is an example of the factoring techniques discussed.
However, if the asker really wants to know how to solve the problem more than he wants to know the solution to the problem, I'll give the technique for solving the problem and then give an example very similar to the asker's problem. For instance, in a question that requires him to find the standard deviation of several numbers, I'll list the steps for finding the s.d., then I'll find the s.d. of another set of numbers (so he can see how to apply the steps).

I would rather give them a hint about how to work it out themselves or a Website where they can get practice or find answers. Sometimes, I suspect people are asking questions that are homework questions and framing them in other forums, and it can be tough to determine if it is a homework question or just a question.

Actually, we act more as teachers. We solve the problem usually step by step. We may end up finding the answer for them, but it is better to show them the problem so they won't get the same type of problem the next night and get stuck all over again.

I try to give as good advise as I can. If I do have the answer to the question I will give it and if not...well then I will find a good site to help. :)
