Whenever I press the button, it makes a clunk and then the light blinks. The only way I can get it open is using a paper clip in the little hole underneath which is a pain and I never have a paperclip on hand. I know I should replace it, but first I want know to know why it stopped working. Do you know?

The drive is both electrical and mechanical. Electrical parts are slowly cooked to death from the heat they generate the moment you turn them on. Mechanical, well, something breaks, or gets out of alignment. I had the same problem, it just happens, I had to change my drive also. Chow

sounds like a mechanical problem. things break. have u tried taking the plastic fron cover off the cd-r drive? maybe theres something wrong with the eject button. you might be able to fix it by doing that to see what is wrong.

It's mechanical. Either the motor which drives the door is going out, or the gears are stripped.
