On average, how long does it take to get a PhD in history, political science, or Asian studies?

I am about to get an M.A. in Asian Studies with a focus on China. I'd like to eventually work for a think tank or university teaching Asian history.

Usually, there are two years of coursework, a year of qualifying exams and language exams, and 2-3 years of dissertation research and writing, culminating in the defense.

Plan on about 5 years, but know that more time might be necessary if there is a fieldwork or archival component to your research, or if you end up with a teaching position or other employment prior to completing your dissertation.
