I recently tore a muscle in a game of basketball and i want to know whether or not it is from not stretching or just perhaps a bit of bad luck. I also want to know what stretches i should do to prevent it in the future

If you pulled a muscle, you know exactly where and when it happened. It is very, very rare that a muscle is pulled while stretching. Stretching should not ever be done to the point of pain. You do not specify where you are hurting, so I cannot tell you an exact answer. However, I do generally recommend that the basketball players I coach do a stretch for the calf muscles, for the hamstrings and the quadriceps, the three major muscle groups of the legs.
