I'm starting an orchestra, and I don't know anyone. Everyone is four or five years older than me. How can I make new friends?

You have already begun the best step toward making friends - finding a common interest with others. Don't let age bother you. It is clear that the others in the group share a love of orchestral music with you, and you should let this be a "jumping off" point in making social connections. Try not to be too pushy in getting people to interact with you. Play it slow and smooth. Start with "Good evening," or "hi there - nice to see you," and then DONT PUSH. Wait for them to reciprocate a greeting. If someone asks how you are, don't give them your life story. Tell them you're "doing great thanks," and then ask about them. The BEST way to make friends is to show an interest in them FIRST, and then they will be likely to engage you in return.

Be patient, be interested, and don't overdo it too quickly.

Good luck, friend.

You're starting an orchestra? Or you're starting IN an orchestra? Either way, that's pretty big. I go to a Junior College and everyone is a lot older than me too. I usually just ask simple questions, or complement someone on their necklace, or joke about homework, and we usually have a nice, small conversation. Soon, we start talking every day.

Be yourself. No need to act wicked just to make someone to be your friend. Treat others as if you'll be moving away the next day, and as if they would be gone the next day too. Don't think too much before you act..on the basis, of course, don't do anything foolish that would make yourself guilty..Good luck~ :P
