They should withhold for MO only since that is where you work. Check your W-2. It will indicate the state where the taxes were withheld. If they withhold for IL and not MO, talk to payroll because they did it wrong. They will need to correct the problem.

Don't listen to the CPA("Suze Y")'s info. I think she's wrong! Employers don't withhold for a specific state as a "favor" fort he employee. They withhold as per where the income was earned.

Maybe. Do you work in Illinois or Missouri? If you work in Illinois, you'll need to file a nonresident IL tax return (Form IL-1040NR) if your employer withheld Illinois withholding. Sometimes, depending on the company, they may have withheld the MO withholding for you. I used to work for a CPA firm just off of the IN border, so many people would commute between IL and IN. Plenty of larger employers, as a favor to their employees, would withhold for the state of residence. So, take a look at your W-2 and see which state is withheld. If it's MO, you're off the hook on filing an IL return. If it has IL w/h, you're stuck with the IL1040-NR.

You will pay federal taxes and state taxes (if any) for Missouri, as long as your worksite is in Missouri.
