I've read the book, but me and my friend were talking about it and we CAN'T remember why Sam left his house. We know he went to his grampa's mountain, but what made him leave? Were his parents mean? It's driving us nuts.

Sam felt lost amidst all his siblings (four brothers and four sisters) living in a crowded apartment in the big city (NYC). He hungered for solitude and a chance to commune with nature. This was a very important book to me growing up. I never had the chance to escape into nature as Sam did, but that desire to find a quiet place that is all my own remains within me to this day.

By the way, I really hated the ending. I felt betrayed by the author for allowing Sam's family to invade his space. How dare she! How dare they!

No his parents werent mean.Sam had a lot of brothers and sisters and he thought living on his own would be of a help to his parents. He grew up hearing the tales of the mountain and decided to give it a try.Like you it has been years since I read the book but I think in the end he goes home and his family returns back to the mountain with him.
