I did this-started where I lived in the southeast and drove round the US camping and hiking at over 20 national parks and seashores (over about 3 months). Part of the time I visited friends, traveled alone, or traveled with friends. I also went to a couple of outdoor music festivals that I signed up for before I started the trip, and when I got tired of camping, I stayed at American Youth Hostels (I was in my late 20's when I did this). Enjoyed the Tetons and Yellowstone in WY (saw a moose, buffalo, elk, antelope), Glacier Nat'l park in MT (saw a bear, that was not fun), loved the North Cascades hiking in the snow in summer in WA, Lassen Volcanic Mtn in CA was some mountain to climb, froze my *** off in Yosemite, had to hike to stay warm (and later Rocky Mtn State Park in CO), loved the views in Arches, Canyonlands and Zion in Utah/NV, and had to check out Mammoth Cave in Ky and hike in the Smokies in NC.

I've spent a couple of months guiding canoeing trips in the Boundary Waters and Voyagers Nat'l Park in MN; I've rafted for a couple of weeks the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. I hiked down to Supai Village and camped on Havasu creek below Havasu Falls (blue-green waterfalls) in the Grand Canyon for a week or so. I've canoed down the Green River in UT for a week and camped on the ledges-didn't see a soul. Rock-climbed in Joshua Tree CA for a week (wonderful top-roping). I've canoed the Okeefenokee for a week and camped on platforms and an island (didn't see anyone for a few days). Sailed out to Ocracoke Island, Hattaras Nat'l Seashore and Cape Lookout Nat'l Seashore in NC (as a guide)...

The other trip I want to do is sail around the pacific by the great barrier reef in australia, check out tasmania, then new zealand, and if possible, see tahiti, and bali...I'm crazy about islands..only been to hawaii, virgin islands, and a number of barrier islands on the US west and east coast..sea-kayaked on an island outside of Roatan Island in the Honduras-best snorkeling in the world (fav dive spot for Germans).

I've had friends who spent months canoeing in Northern Canada or buy "round-the-world" air line tix and travel around the world by plane stopping off along the way wherever they felt like it.

Have fun!
