Basically, it means before you start trying to save or store something, make sure it will be secure so that you are not wasting it instead. It is very similar to a saying in the Bible, in the book of the prophet Haggai.

At that time, the people of Israel had returned from exile and were working hard and trying to rebuild their homes and save money and make things little better for themselves and their children. But they had forgotten their agreement with God to be His representatives to the world, and they were so busy trying to build up their own fortunes that they were neglecting the temple.

So God sent the prophet with a message, pointing out to them (Haggai 1:5,6) “Now, this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but you have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them into a purse with holes in it.’ ”

God was withholding His blessing from them, because they were being materialistic and not giving Him thanks for allowing them to return from their exile. Without God’s blessing in one’s life, no amount of money, no amount of resources, will be enough. With God’s blessing in one’s life, there will always be enough for our daily bread, and we learn to be content and are spared the miseries of those who are jealous.

That’s pretty much the same thing as learning not to pour into a vessel without checking first to see that it does not leak.

We must think carefully about the possible results or consequences before doing something--as in telling a secret to a big-mouth friend, or unwise investments.
