The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.
Hiccups are not associated with pregnancy in any way though...

I do not believe I have ever of that one... only that it is something to do with air passing incorrectly? or having to do with the chest/diaphragm?

added later:

ummm...? okay... I gotta ask.... are you making a joke about diaphragms not working right? I know I hear all the time how naive I am... especially at my age.. so I did not crack any jokes early... but it is too easy of joke.... diaphragm not working right.... ?

also would like to say that I actually do have a friend who never gets the hiccups... except when she is pregnant... sorry I had forgotten about it last night... just like I always know I am pregnant when I smell something foul (okay, this is funny and gross.. but for real...) if someone passes gas, I dry heave... and then I do not even bother with the pregnancy test? the point? we are all hyper sensitive and our bodies react in the strangest, oddest ways when we are pregnant... one might get the hiccups... or dry heave at smells... or clean like a fiend... or whatever... just cause we never hear about it? does not mean it 100% is not true.... sorry I had forgotten... leaving the joke above? I like silly, inane humor.. it made me smile.. diaphragm not working... makes you roll the eyes... and groan.. ;)
good luck!

no.... Usually something has triggered involuntary contractions in the diaphragm. You may have swallowed air when you were eating fast or taking a shower or when you suddenly got excited. You can get hiccups from eating an "irritating" food (usually gas inducers such as vegetables or beans) or from eating both hot and cold foods at the same time. Drinking alcohol or carbonated beverages can also set off those involuntary (hic!) contractions. In short, just about anything can cause hiccups.

Oh, man. if getting hiccups is a sign of being pregnant, I am in BIG trouble.

My mother, my grown children, my grand daughters and I get hickups about once a month and we're NOT pregnant.

No. Hiccups are not related to pregnancy in any way.

Good luck!

If this was true (which it is not), then my husband would be pregnant all the time!
