I read somewhere that one would need a visa to visit India. Is this true if the visit is for pleasure and not to work there? Because visas are usually associated with working in the country the visa is for. If so, how long does the process take to get the visa and how long is the visa good for?

Depends on your citizenship and how long you intend to stay in India. Go to the nearest Indian embassy/consulate in your area or visit this website: http://www.tourindia.com/htm/homepage.htm

You have both a visit and work visa to choose from which you could get from a major city that has an India(n) consulate or embassy.

You have to have a visa to visit India for any reason if you are coming from the U.S. Google the India consulate web page for the major city closest to you for more information.
