The best thing the girlfriends can do is ask the mom how they can help her. It may mean pooling resources to hire a special sitter so mom can go out with her friends. It may mean doing shifts at the mom's house to help with the housework or the other kids, if she has any. Taking any of this mom's other kids out for an ice cream or a trip to the park might be a huge blessing. Your best bet by far would be to ask the mom what you could do. Be prepared to offer suggestions if she says "anything" or "oh, nothing" as we tend to do when general help is offered.

First of all, children with autism need you to realize that they are unique individuals who bring special gifts to this world. They need gentle guidance to explore new things, visual models, and for someone to try to relate to them on their level. Repetition helps, routine helps, but not all children with autism dont want you to involve them, they just dont know how to involve you. So take a look at what they are doing and get on their level. Show lots of love, ask mom what the kiddo likes and join in.

Autistic children need repetition, lots of it, daily routines and they need to have visuals to see what they need to do. You also need to patient with them and you need to keep them active because they tend to get bored. Someone can help a mom by helping the child with sensory skills or teaching him new things. Just don't get the child off their routine or else they'll panic. Go to www.autismspeaks.org for more information. Just look up more information on Autism.

Love, patients, understanding, same things that your friend needs, plus some free babysitting would be great. She has a child that most likely does not appear to respond to her love, as a mother that hurts, just letting her talk about it, and any help her friends can give will help her so much. I'm glad she has girlfriends looking out for her, she needs them.
