Our 14 year old is in the first yr of high school and has lots of honors courses. He averages homework about 3 days a week with occasional "projects" that require a few hours attention on the weekends. Unless it's math, the homework is usually done quickly. Algebra problems sometimes take a bit of time on each. I'd also say that he's studied for more quizzes and tests than he has in the past.

I think it depends on teachers too since some teachers go easier or harder on their students on homework but honors classes are usually supposed to have homework everyday, especially Math. You definitely have MUCH more homework than you had in middle school. I personally don't think it's that bad anymore because the amount of homework you get in your freshman year is nothing compared to the amount of homework you have in your later high school years. So just take advantage of your first year despite the amount of homework you get.
