Easy.
Go to the computer store and get a "crossover Ethernet cable" -- plug in the laptop and PC and you have a network. You did not say, but if you have Windows XP the networking software is all included.
Cost $10. YOU DO NOT NEED A ROUTER. Save your money.

If you want RELIABLE networking, Your best bet is to go with a router.
I have a linksys wireless G speed booster router, and the laptop has built in wireless speed boosted wlan (wireless local area network) .
wired or wireless routers will work, but wireless gives you the ability to go about without hooking the laptop to anything.
Here is what you do.
Get you a router* (linksys is the best) (comes with 1 ethernet cable)
You will hook the routers "internet port" to the modem (DSL/Cable)
Then plug the router "Ethernet 1" port into your desktop's ethernet.
now, you will want to pair the wireless if you have that. Very easy to do, and instructions are included for a basic setup with routers.
If your laptop does not have wireless, then you will need to buy one more ethernet cat5(or higher) cable, and hook it from the router into Ethernet port 2.
That is really about it, because the other info is really simple, and included witha software disk/instructions.
You can always get a removable/portable hard drive too. They're nice.
Feel free to contact me.

Buy a router, a switch or a hub and a cat5e patch cable for each computer. Should be less than $30 if you buy from eBay or other places offering competitive prices.
