Most probably it's fear. Fear of being alone, fear of losing some kind of security, fear of change, fear that it could get worse, that it's just not possible to have relationships that are trusting and loving.
Also it can mean that a truly intimate relationship is not the top-priority in the life of the involved. And that can even be ok. Consider marriages arranged for the continuity of a family line or the gay or asexual manager who marries to advance his career, the Thai-lady who marries a foreigner to support her family back home.
It's of course super-cool to have deeply intimate relationships with people but in reality it also takes a lot of character and skills and constant vigilance. And only a few people have the charisma, intelligence and persistence to make that work. So they settle what seems next best to them.

sense of belonging in a relationship.. some people fear of not having somebody beside them so in return they just blind themselves from the fact that there is nothing in the relationship. also the comfort zone that every relationship creates... its often scary to think of stepping out of that zone..

kids. fear of the unknown. cant get off the gravy train. when only one partner feels that its hopeless and the other is hanging on for dear life. friendship, when you were friends first.

i was in one and it was because i got to know him and knew where i stood so didn't matter .until i found all those things with some oneelse. that happens then you move on.

its crazy but we do it just to feel secure when in all reality we are just kidding ourselves.
