OK, I've found some interesting info on Jade through a couple of websites. It was known throughout ancient China as 'Yu' or 'The Imperial/Royal Gem'.
Funnily enough it actually was first used in weapons and tools due to it's hardness.
It is considered even to this day to be a symbol of those who are good, beautiful and/or precious, and is thought to embody the Confucian values of wisdom, justice, compassion, modesty and courage.
Egyptians also prized Jade as a symbol of Love, inner-peace, harmony and balance. It appears from the site I found that Jade is commonly accepted as a lucky or protective stone.
You can draw your own conclusions as to what the person bestowing this gift may have intended.

That's really nice to get him a gift. I don't think it's to feminine at all. Just explain to him what it means and what it's for, so he won't get he wrong idea. I believe it is perfect for the occasion. I think he'll like it
