I like the idea of talking about what it takes to be a friend. People can learn from the experience of having no friends or losing a friend and being acutely aware of the lonliness.
The starting point is that lost, lonley place where you have to make a decision to keep going with the lonliness - bitter and blaming others and the world, or coming to terms with how you got there and starting over to learn how to be a friend in order to have a friend. I'd read that kind of story because there's a solution and a moral to the story. good Luck.

If it is a story, give an element of sacrifice, a giving-up spirit illustrated, for the sake of friendship! If it is an essay/paper, give examples of great friendships from fiction, like Harry Potter, "Tale of two cities" (Charles Dickens), etc. !
