I often get a lot of praise from people about my grades and how smart I am. But I don't want to think that I'm better than someone just because my grades are higher or my class rank is higher. What are ways to humble myself?

You don't need to apologize for being smart, the grades you get, or the praise other people give you. Being smart is part of who you are, grades are just letters to help you get to college, and other people tell you these things to show that they're proud of you. There will always be people who try to make you feel like you're doing something wrong and those who envy the way you live your life. I suggest you keep doing what you're doing and ask the people who give you praise to stop because you don't think you're better than anyone else just because my grades are higher or my class rank is higher.

Grades amount to nothing in the real world. If you really want to humble yourself travel to a 3rd world country(and not a resort city in that country). See how most of the world lives and then try to solve even the simplest problem. Go to Ethopia and try to feed people or even provide clean water to drink. Such as how do you provide shelter to the earth quake victims in India and Pakistan who amost all still without proper shelter after a year because or the romoteness of where they live. Or any of the smaller poor countried that have been hit by the hurricanes. Try to help the all orphan children in Africa find a place to live while more become orphaned each day.
Or if you can't travel just go to your local hospital into the terminal cancer ward. Try to cure those people. Imagine for just one minute that the person in that bed is someone you love.

All you will be able to do at moments like these is to pray just like anyone else. You would be suprised how quick the athiest change there tune when faced with the death of a loved one they pray too. You will be totaly helpless to help them just like everyone else. Death and disaster have a humbling effect on all of us. Because in the end we all die smart or stupid we all end up 8 ft under. That car could run the curb any minute and you could end up in a wheel chair or even dead. So stop worrying about praise for you and worry about praise for the only one who can really make a difference. All praise is for God!

I think that merely by wanting to humble yourself, you're well on your way to enlightenment! Use your talents to help those less fortunate than you. This doesn't bring about humility, but it's what being humble leads to. When you think you're better than everyone else, it would never occur to you to share your good fortune, because you'd feel you've earned it by some divine right.

Nelson Mandela said something you should consider: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Go to a busy shopping mall and make a poop in a very busy, populated area. The police will arrest you for indecent exposure, pooping in public, resisting arrest, public defecation. When done, run through the mall butt naked yelling profanities. When you're released from the corrections facility and psychiatric institution, You'll be humble.

God has given you the gift. He could take it away any time He pleases. Every one has something they are good at. Other people may not get as good of grades but they may be better at other things. Compare yourself up - meaning compare yourself to people who are smarter than you. Then you may feel humble.

You have already take the first step, when you said you do not want to think you are better than anyone else.
The way I look at my education and life's education is what I have learned in a class as a black and white education, from the colors of ink and page. What I learn from people around me is my education in color. For me the grades gained in education is nothing more than a guideline. A basic understanding of what is ahead. What you learn in black and white is measurable. What you learn in color has infinite possibilities.

Humility isn't denying the obvious talents you have but in recognizing that no matter how good you are there is always room for improvement. Don't compare yourself with your classmates - compare yourself with the Einstein's of the world. There is always someone who knows more than you. Can you communicate what you know clearly enough to someone else so that they too will understand? By doing so, you demonstrate that they have as much value as you, which is the essence of humility.

Well the best way to keep yourself humble is to know there is always someone out there smarter then you. You know how the saying goes "You learn something new everyday", it also means there is something else you need to know and everyday you think you know something there is something else added to it the next day and the next day and so on.
Also say "Thank you" and let them know you study and work hard to learn all you can.

Sometimes it is not up to you to be humble. Many times you may give bad impression to others of not being humble due to jealousy.

Best bet is keep yourself in low profile. Don't brag too much about your success
