depends on the kind of fish -- the best bet would be a betta -- you don't need the air thingy even. you could set up an extreme micro-aquarium with a couple small shrimp (ghost or cherry) some java moss and java fern and a couple minnows like white clouds or zebra danios. most fish like constant temperatures and that is practically impossible in 1 gallon

What kind of fish?
I have a 1 gallon (nightlight in my kids room) with 2 small male guppies. I also have a 75 gallon tank full of guppies. So when the little ones in the 1 gallon get too big I'll swap them for a couple smaller ones.
Also change about half of the water every other day. Use a turkey baster to get any gunk from the bottom.
As for the type of fish. If they are goldfish get them out of there. Find a local park or a place that has a goldfish pond and ask if you could donate them. Then go get a single male guppy. He will do just fine alone and look very beautiful.
Actually a 1 gallon is even ok for a Betta. Alot better than the little plastic buckets they are in at the stores.
Better yet get a 10 gallon tank set-up. It shouldn't be too expensive. Around $50. A Bettaand a school of 6 Noen Tetra's would look awesome in a 10 gallon.

One gallon tank is wayyyyy too small and the three fish will be dead in no time... You need to keep ONE Betta in there, and change the water every other day, and not from the tap without treating it first... And the "thingy" does not put air into the water. It makes bubbles inside that break at the surface, releasing the air there, not in the water. Google "surface gas exchange in aquariums" and read up there... And also Google "aquarium nitrogen cycle" while you are there.

I have a one gallon tank with an air filter, I started with two fish, but after a couple of days the small one died. He looked pretty beat up, like a fight over territory. The one that lived is reaching a year old. For a one gallon tank I would only stick to one fish. Maybe go get a bigger tank or somehow make two of them disappear.

I have a one gallon tank with a filter - I keep my betta in there - sometimes with his guppy friends (2) - 3 fishies in all, so, if you're on it, you can keep your one gallon tank. You just have to clean it regularly. But don't change out all the water (prefferabley 25-30%)! And make sure you use the right fish chemicals water if you're a new fish owner.
: )
I also have a 10 gallon tank we clean out every 2 weeks or so. Soooo.
If you can. Try to keep an eye on the tank and clean it as much as possible : ) not too extreme though, or else you might give the fish a chemical burn! :-O ohno <-like me, hahaha, it was on accident, I didn't read the label right.
Got any questions post it on one of my topics and I'll get back with you asap~ (*unless your questions were already answered*)

Water. Water Conditioner (probable) A filter out (usually) Fish nutrients Heater - (probable) some know-how of the Nitrogen cycle, water parameters and worry-unfastened tank care facilitates too. surprisingly lots each little thing else is an optionally available extra, try kits, lighting fixtures, gravel, air pumps and so on are all smart issues, yet you do not choose them to maintain a fish alive. If they are goldfish the tank is to small for even one of them. If not, one possibly two fish at most. Go to a good aquarium shop and ask about maintenance. Also, get yourself a book on aquarium set up. There is a lot more to it than what you may think.
Good Luck

Depending on the type of fish, they probably won't live long in such tight quaters. Make sure you have a water filter!
