I think you need to be careful about the source of the information.
There are many sources that are free but the information provided is not based upon scientific research.
If you are doing serious research you need to make sure you are drawing from what are called peer reviewed articels or journals.
There are other pay per use sites that let you reference peer review articels. Many of these journals are only usbale online for a fee but when you go to the library you can use them for free.

It's really not that much different. Although, in a library, you do have access to books which are probably not found somewhere on a website.
For the most part though, the real reason is that professors (and teachers) are old and want to do things the old school way by doing it in a library. Some may be afraid of technology and may want you to learn the "fundamentals" of research. Also, many people see ANY source that is on the internet as being invalid. So if you're doing a paper that requires library research, just get a few quotes from a couple of stupid books and the rest from the internet.

It is faster and a little harder. Online there are a lot of choices and you have to pick one out of for example, one thousand. Library doesn't keep up to date all the time.

faster, but the quality of the info is poorer. There's a lot of junk and quacks out there. Sometimes there is too much info to choose from
