most experts believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were one of North Carolina's most important exports early in the state's history.

Below is a link to a UNC alum who's wanting to explain it once and for all... apparently it comes from the tar and pine that's found in the state's forests and was originally used to augment the British naval supplies.
