H & R Block, like most preparers charge depending on the amount of time and complexity of the return. If you are self-employed or have other complications the return will be higher. They will give you an estimate over the phone if you call.

For a regular return, they charge by the difficulty of the return and how many forms you have (because each form goes in a different category - employment income (T4), investments (T5?), etc.). If you want "cash back", which is usually cheaper depending on how much you're getting back, they charge a percentage of your refund. For the first $300, they take off 15% and 5% off the amounts over $300. So if your return is under $300, they take off 15% so on a $300 refund, they charge $40. If your refund is $400, they charge $40 on the first $300, then 5% of the remaining $100, so they would charge $45. Plus you get your money back right away. If you did a regular return, it would take longer to get your refund and would probably cost more. I think a VERY basic return starts at around $35-40.

You can also do it yourself on the H&R website for $19.99

H&R block in Canada is crap. They overcharge, charge by the number of slips you have, maintain seasonal hours ( not open usually past april 30th) so there is no after-filing support with questions, requests from the CRA, etc.
Stay away from them, find a good solid small company that is open all year and knows what they are doing. H&R block only hires seasonal employees, some of whom have just "proved themselves" by completing a mock tax exam.
Stick to the professionals who know what they are doing and who are accessible ALL YEAR long.

I worked for H&R Block for a couple of seasons. At that time we charged by the page. Most people who come to Block have relatively uncomplicated situations. If there was a business or other complications we sent the return to be done by specialists.
