You won't have to put up with a roommate who's too messy or too clean, and with a really weird schedule/bed time.

If ur a Freshman, most Univ & Colleges won't let u first semester or qtr. have a single. They want u to interact with dorm/apt roommates. It's very important to fill out the housing request honestly. If ur a slob, say so & the same if ur a neat freak... so they match u up properly. If things r not going well, u decide to room solo... it's usually quite more expensive and very tiny rooms. Remember a dorm room is not for STUDYING, that is where libraries, study halls, lounges come in. Finding the quiet places to get real study time in. Privacy can be obtain both having a roommate and being in single room. Roommates just need to have a contract, rules, and don't be afraid to tell them when ur upset or they start borrowing without asking kind of stuff. If u have a frank discussion, things should fall into place fine. Don't bring the opposite or same sex in rooms for days at a time... respect your roommate privacy. Enjoy each others friends, it will help u network.

I have lived in both a double dorm room and a single. My first year in college I had a room mate and she was really nice and we got along really well. I loved it because we talked about things and she was quiet and respectful and culturaly open minded like me so we had a lot of fun. We learned about each others culture and really enjoyed each others company.
But the secound year I was not so lucky. My roommate was a slob who asked for a non-smoking roommate and then insisted on smoking cloves in the dorm room. She requested an all female dorm dispite having plenty of co-ed dorms(knowing there is a no boys past the living room or in the dorm at night rule) yet, She would sneek her boyfriend in the dorm at night and want to have him in the room. I requested a female dorm because I do not feel comfortable with men hanging around in my bedroom. I am open minded but a bedroom is a personal space.
I was so lucky that year that when I went to the housing office and complained they said they had just had a single open up and it was the only room available. So due to the problems I ended up being moved into a single for a double price for the rest of the year. It was so nice and private. I loved the quiet place to study with no messy room mate. But I missed the fun late night conversation my 1st room mate and I had. But I still invited girls and and I was rarely alone. The next year I had another great room mate but she transfered to Villanova after the first semester. And another slob moved in. This time I decided to move off campus and share an apartment. For the same price we paid in campus housing we got a 2 bedroom with a big living room and I could cook food I liked instead of that nasty commons food.

You can also get isolated from the rest to the students.
You may not make as many friends. Friends can help you cope with the stress of college.

It's great to have a private space (single room) but it can be much more expensive than sharing.
