I have a 1/2 hp opener and all the motor will do is hum when the switch is depressed.
All the lights work, the motor just does not lift the door

yep. it's the gears. if you don't want to wait, many door companies stock the replacement set. we make lots of money replacing those gears. god bless sears lol. one little hint: you don't have to replace all the gears. just the big one that is stripped. leave the smaller gear on the motor shaft alone. it doesn't wear out like the bigger flat one. for the bigger flat one, you can just remove the assembly from the top. 3 (5/16") screws, remove a tiny gear at the bottom of the shaft, and it slides right up and out. try to mark the chain where it sat on the sprocket, use a paer clip or small wire) so you won't have too much trouble resetting your travel limits. if the unit is more than 5 yrs old, i would actually recommend repairing it rather than replacing. i'm seeing alot of shoddy work and weak electronics in the latest openers from them. (you just can't sell the cheapest opener on the market without cutting corners somewhere)
and remember to use the lube supplied with the kit or you might regret it :)

Does it sound like the motor is turning? Just not turning the
chain?
Disconnect power. Open cover on unit. Look at the
drive gears. They are plastic. these may strip with
age or heavy use. IF so, you can order a rebuild kit online
rather than buying a new unit. If you've got somebody
handy with a screwdriver, they can replace the gears in
an hour or so....much cheaper than buying and installing
a whole new unit. I forget where I got my rebuild kit,
but apparently there are really only a few types of
garage door openers and companies just stick
their labels on the outside. Just search on google. You'll
find a kit that will have parts for nearly any opener and
cost less than 20 bucks.
Oh, and if it is the gears, you'll probably find some plastic
dust right away once you open the cover.
I remembered the fussiest part of swapping the gears was
popping out a roll pin that held one gear in place. a vice or
multiple hands would have been useful.

This happened to me several years ago. It was bad engineering by the company that supplies the opener for Sears. They used a nylon reducing gear to turn the chain sprocket shaft. The nylon gear was either stripped or split (I can't remember). No plastic part will withstand that kind of forces over many operations. It's just a matter of time (probably around several years) before it breaks. If a metal gear was used, it'll probably last as long as the motor. Just to save maybe a quarter per gear. The hum you hear is probably the motor free spinning. The only solution is go to the Sears parts web site and get the gear and replace it. Another better solution is to find a metal gear that is similar enough to fit and function. I didn't bother with neither. Just went out a bought a new opener only and replaced it.

I have a sears 1/2 hp craftsman opener. Everything works, although I cannot figure out how to make the two lights go off after opening and closing the door. They stay illuminated all the time. I have to unscrew them to have them turn off. Any suggestions???

Is there a repair kit available for a 1/2 hp chain drive Sears chain drive opener? I don't know what the exact problem is. I hear it running but chain is not moving. The repair man came over...did not look at it, just said it was over 30 years old and I had to buy a new one. Really? I like my metal parts, not plastic.
