I think you specifically need to understand to empathise, but you don't have to understand specifically to sympathise.

No. Just be in tune to their feelings. At least then you would understand that they felt bad, even if you didn't know the specifics of why.

Not exactly. Those of us who have "enhanced" intuitions (sometimes referred to as empaths) read people with accuracy; sometimes to their discomfort.

I had my personality verified by a psychologist years ago, and the interesting thing was that I had always rather relied on my intuition in many ways, and this evaluation was just a validation.
