Is the movie Cold Mountain historically accurate? Why or why not?

The opening scene, which was the siege of Petersburg, was accurate; the rest was historical fiction. I would say it was enlightening as to what a Confederate could go through in the late stages of the war.

Not sure I wasn't alive back then. Plus I haven't seen the movie.
