Okay, I am a new owner of a baby bearded dragon. I have the cage all set up like I have read about on the net with the temps uv light and the heat lamp. I was wondering at night, do I turn on the 75 w night glo exo terra (shines dim purple) light, or is that not needed. On one website I read that it is not needed and that it will actully keep the bearded dragon up at night. Also last night which was his 1st night home, as soon as I shut the light off, he crawled down and went to sleep in a corner... tonight, at the same time, I shut the lights off and he is still sitting at the top on his branch...like he is basking. Will he come down to go to sleep, or should I turn the lights back on and wait a while untill he gets sleepy? Also yesterday, being his 1st day home, he ate 5 crickets, and today, he wouldnt eat any.... do you think I should try 1st thing in the morning? Thanks for any advise.

You'll want to turn off all lighting/heat sources at night. As long as your nighttime temperatures don't go below 60F it's fine. They need the nighttime temperature drop. It's normal for them to not eat for the first few days. I wouldn't worry about that yet. Please email/message me with more questions or if you need any explaining! I'm really happy to help! :)

Hi. We just got our BD last week. The first nights we had him he slept in a corner. But lately he's been fast asleep at the top branch. He stays there until the morning. You should turn off the lights at the same time every night. He'll start getting sleepy about 30 minutes before they go off.

If the temperature in your home at night doesn't get lower than 19-20 deg.C, you don't need any heat source at night. You should'nt have any lights on in the cage unless it's one of those red infrared heat lamps.

He could be shedding which is why he might not be eating anything now. Mine didn't eat much for 2 days. Now I can't keep him full enough...

Good luck!

i thought i left a reply. then i went to check this and it wasnt there. id first start off making sure you have a uva/uvb in there. it can be fatal if you dont! second id use a red heat bulb, reptiles cant see the red light and you have to keep the temp at least 84 degrees at alllll times. third. you can leave them crickets in there, just watch for when he'll eat them. i doubt it will be at the same time everyday. depending on the size it is ( up to 6 months_ needs 5 crickets 3x a day! but you also need to put nice dark leafy greens ( avoid iceburg lettuce, and broccolli) beardies are omnivores, so they need the protein from both insects and veggies!

he will eventually get tired, i dont think you need that purple light thing. he will probably eat tomorrow, but i know next to nothing about bearded dragons. they are cool though. so yea i bet he will go to sleep sometime soon, go check right now(to see if hes sleeping). also you could get a timer for the light so you dont have to turn it on and off at night and so that it will come on and off the same time daily. but you will have to adjust the length of the lighting the closer we get to spring

Do you live in Australia? Anyway, lots of animals like that, for example my frogs, will eat all they can and then not eat again for a week. Think about it, in the wild, they dont know when they will eat again, so your baby probably ate all he could just in case, because he/she doesn't realize that it will be regualrly fed. My only other advise would be to make the enclosure as natural as possible, he would have had a day and night if he was in the wild, so give him a day and night in captivity. maybe you could get him a friend? Also, provide logs and rocks etc and he'll pick a spot that makes him happy.
