I'm an Aaliyah fan, & it's been almost 6 yrs. since her death. Her birthday just passed, & I honored her on that day by going see her tomb for the 1st time. My twin sister said, "Let that woman rest. Dang, she can't even rest on her b-day!" That made me feel hurt because it was me & my twin sister's 18th b-day when she died.

& I wasn't the only one who went to Aaliyah's resting place. There was about 30 of us fans, & every August 25 & January 16, we fans gether for an Aaliyah tribute. Why is it OK for everyone else to pay tribute, but wrong for me? One foster cousin of mine told me that I shouldn't be listening to Aaliyah's music anymore. I said, "Why?", & he said, "Because it's old!" but then later that day he was listening to Biggie Smalls music. He's been dead way longer than her.

I truly think you did the right thing by honoring her on her birthday. Your twin sister is entitled to her opinion but that doesn't make it right. You do what feels right to you and is from the heart.

Lots of people are fans of Jim Morrison (dead), Kurt Cobain (also dead), Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix (dead, and dead) and Elvis Presley (dead, last I heard). If we couldn't listen to music of those that have passed, all the classical musicians (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart) would not be recorded and re-recorded. The music transcends their lives. That's why it's timeless. Same for all the dead rock and pop stars.

I think as long as your interest doesn't interfere with your daily life obligations (work or school, health, family, relationships), there's nothing wrong with it.

My favorite dead rock star is Brian Jones, one of the original Rolling Stones. I read a couple of books but I'm not like obsessed or anything. Oh yeah, and Brandon Lee who was an actor, not a rock star.

There are plenty of deceased musicians and such that I still listen to, such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Randy Rhodes, and some members of The Ramones. It doesn't matter if it's old or not. If it's good, it's good, regardless of the age. The terms classic and timeless come to mind.

Personally, I think that if Aaliyah lived, people would now be saying, "Beyonce who?"
Aaliyah was a fabulous artist who left us way before her time.
I say pay tribute. At least you found a real star who deserves it!
