what is socially retarted? what does it mean exactly...i heard it in a movie??

"Retarded" basically means "behind in development." So one who is mentally retarded is mentally behind others of his/her age group. One can have retarded growth (physically) due to illness or lack of nutrition. So, "socially retarded" refers to one who is behind in social development. If used correctly, it would mean someone who acts much younger in a social situation than others of his/her age. This might be someone who walks up to others at a party and starts showing off his/her possessions or bragging about accomplishments. It might be someone who monopolizes the conversation or is inappropriately "tongue-tied." However, if you saw it in a movie, it might mean any sort of socially inappropriate behavior, by a person who is trying to have friends or "fit in" in a social situation.
