And the old keyboard does NOT have a USB port and cannot connect anywhere on the laptop. I've looked for adapters that can do this and they do exist, but I'm not sure what works.

Any ideas?

I think I may have to carry in the keyboard to a place to have it fitted properly.

Thanks!

You need what is called a "USB PS2 adapter". This will let you connect your old keyboard and mouse to USB port on your computer. They usually cost from $5 to $10. You can get either "dual" adapter to connect both keyboard and mouse or your can buy the "single" adapter to connect only one device. Its very easy to use, you don't have to take it anywhere to fit. I found one on tigerdirect.com

Your keyboard will have a ps/2 port on it. To plug it into a usb port you want to get a ps/2 usb adapter plug, which works just like a plug adapter for foreign wall sockets - you just plug it on to the end of your keyboard and you will be able to plug your keyboard into your laptop.
You should be able to get an adapter from an computer/electronics store for less than 5 bucks easy, but you might want to make sure they have some in stock before going in

Sugarpie,

the cost of that adapter coupled with the age of your keyboard is a bad recipe for that laptop. USB keyboards are relatively cheap. The best approach is to buy a new generic USB keyboard and you have your problem solved.

The old keyboards had a big DIN connector. The newer keyboards have a mini-DIN connector. Sounds like what you would need is a big DIN to mini-DIN adapter.
