How doe Lionel train reverse?

what is the mechanism for reversing . Also the whistle is this a DC modulation from controller

If it is an old 3 rail type train...turn off the voltage and turn it back on and the train should reverse. the one I had I just moved the lever from going to stop and then to going again..that reversed it then repeated to make it go forward again.
