Of the first 3 answers I have to agree with Diamond.

I've installed thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and have lost many a piece in trying carbide, or masonry bits to create holes for plumbing etc.

You don't state the need for, or reason for the hole, but might it be possible to have the area behind the hole at a space where your grout line is?

I have drilled ceramic tile many times using a carbide bit. To keep the bit in the right place while starting the hole, you simply take a pointed punch and hammer and tap a little chip in the tile surface. That will keep the point of the bit from wandering until you get started drilling By the way, the tiles were in place on a shower wall when I drilled them

There are bits made especially to drill holes in ceramic tile. They are available at hardware stores, home centers and generally any place that sells tiles and tile tools and supplies.

I'd use a Dremel rotary tool and a carbide bit. Score the glaze (if any) off the tile before you drill, so the bit won't wander around.

They sell special drill bits for this purpose at any building center, like Home Depot. About $5.

you want a diamond bit. for it to scratch its way thru otherwise you will break the tile. It is like drilling in glass.
