Songwriting after all is an art, just like painting, so there is no really right or wrong way to do it, and no specific form you have to follow.
However, USUALLY, there is two ways of writing a song with lyrics. Writing the lyrics first, and placing a melody over the words, OR writing the melody first, and placing lyrics of the melody.
What I do and most people do is place the lyrics over the melody (writing the melody first, then lyrics). You come up with your chord combinations (what chords and the general "feel" for how your song goes) first, usually by playing the piano or guitar. Then once you have built the steady foundation for your song, start humming a little melody over the song.
It's ok if words come out while you are making up your melody, sometimes that just happens. It's a good idea to write those words down as soon as you get them, because it help you remember how your song goes (it stinks really bad to loose your idea!), and you can always go back and change them if you want.
Although the reverse of the previous method is rarely used because it is extremely hard to do, you could be one of the few (like Elton John) that writes lyrics first, THEN writes the song. It's a very neat skill to have because it allows a person to turn theirs or someone else's poetry into a song.
If you are simply asking "But how do I write lyrics in the first place?", well, here's the best answer I can give you. Make sure that you write the lyrics from your heart, or true feelings. When you write false ones (ones that aren't really expressing how you feel, such as writing about death and suicide when you are actually happy), they always seem to come out wrong and seem almost as if they were to obvious.
And your structure question....I find the best way to structure a song is to simply write : Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Verse 3, Chorus.
But remember, there is no right or wrong way to write songs! So good luck, and email me if you have any other questions!

Not that I'm an expert, but for me to write lyrics, I generally need some sort of inspiration to get me started. I can't just sit down like some writers and create something out of nothing. If it isn't something I feel inside, then I simply can't do it. I've written a few poems / lyrics in my time, but they are usually few and far between due to the fact that the inspiration factor just isn't there that often. I'd rather write one or two decent lyrics over a period of months than I would several lousy ones in a short period of time. Also, there are many good books on the subject. You can find them on the internet. They can be quite helpful, especially for the new writer. Just remember, before you can write song lyrics, you need something to write about. That is almost always the first step.

Lyrics are easy, it is all about the flow and the rythem of it. When writting a song it is important to know what your vocal style is ( or of the person who will actually be singing it). Just make it poetry and no it does not have to rhyme but it should flow in a way that does not make you stumble on the vocals or put the song off beat. It is all about you, make it personal and just play with it.

if it were me, You should structure it the way you feel like doing it. Songs are flexible and you can do whatever you want with it. It's just like art. You can draw whatever comes up to your mind, and it'll still be called art. Same applies for music. Just make sure it's pleasing to the ear âº

Think about anything, whatever pops into your mind. It could be something extremely dorky but I'm sure you could make something amaaazing out of it. Once you get a couple lines down just keep going see where it leads you. Don't try to hard if you do you'll get nothing out of the experience.
