With a bottle of propane (the kind you use for portable torches) and hose attached, very lightly administer doses to potential areas (intake gaskets, rubber hoses to air inlet, fuel inejctors, etc.). When you hear the engine RPM change, or react in any way, that's where the vacuum leak is. Hint: a vacuum leak will be more easily found on an engine that has "cold soaked" (sat overnight), than one at operating temperature.

Find something flammable in a spray can. The cheapest carburetor cleaner--the kind full of tolulene, and which burns--is best, but almost anything except ether starting fluid will probably do. Start the car and spray it over the intake manifold, the various vacuum hoses and anywhere else that looks suspicious. Don't ignore hidden hoses like those for the PVC valve, the power brake booster, the fuel canister, and tiny ones hidden inside the air cleaner. When you spray a flammable liquid onto an open vacuum leak, it'll be pulled into the engine and affect the idle speed. Good luck.

Listen for leaks, spray WD-40 around the intake and anywhere there could be a vacuum leak while the engine is still cool as not to start a fire. Plug the vacuum line that goes to the power brake booster and see if it makes a difference.
A vacum gauge will tell you what the pressure is but not if you have a minor leak.

very simple this is what you can do. just go to the local auto parts store and buy a can of brake parts cleaner. start your car and start spraying it it where there are vacuum lines and around the intake. if the cars rpm changes when you spray it in a certain spot. well then you now where your problem is. im willing to bet it is the intake manifold gaskets. i 've replaced several of these already on cougars with the 2.5 dohc and on ford contours and mercury mystieqes also with the same 2.5 dohc engine

T into a tb line or the line from brake booster with a vac guage you can get a nice one cheap at advance auto or napa. the intake should read about 17-21 inches of vacumn at idle.
