there are 3 leads that connect to the starter solenoid.
the battery cable.
a small wire that comes from wiring harness.
and a lead that goes directly into starter.
all 3 leads need to be tight.
when you cross the wire are you crossing the small lead with the battery cable? if so is the ignition switch in the run position when you do this?
crossing the small lead with the battery cable would engage the solenoid which will proved current to the starter and the start turns. if the ignition switch is in the off position when doing this as soon as you uncross the wires the start will stop turn and the engine will not run. this test will verify that your starter and solenoid function correctly.
if the ignition which is in the run position and you cross these 2 connections the engine should remain running after uncrossing as long as it starts before uncrossing. if not your ignition switch is probably bad.
if you are crossing the battery cable with the lead that goes into the starter stop this is not a safe test. see test above to test solenoid.
if the starter and solenoid test OK bypass your neutral safety switch and try to start. it this work replace neutral safety switch.
if it does not start and your car has any type of alarm / anti theft system that its most likely your problem. if not check wiring between ignition switch - neutral safety switch - and starter solenoid, repair if damaged. last check ignition switch.

I own a shop and will try to help you. Turn on the ignition switch, test for power at the starter, and at the coil. There should be power at both places. When you jump across the big wire to the little wire you are bypassing the start side of the switch. If it starts there, then when you remove the jumper (screw driver) from it, it stalls. This means you are loosing the 12 volt supply to the run side of the switch. One wire is to activate the solonoid, and the other is to keep it running when the power falls off. Do you have these wires crossed? The one to the inside (closest to the motor) should have power "only" when you turn the key to the start mode. The other should have power on it all the time, when the switch is in the on position. If these are crossed it will act just as yours is doing. If you don't have power to the coil with the switch on, then there is a problem with a fuse somewhere between the switch and the coil, or a bad neutral safety switch, or a bad wire. The + cable comes to the starter, and another wire is hooked in the same place that supplies the ignition switch. Turn on the switch, and it supplies the coil. Turn it to start, and it supplies power to the wire closest to the engine on the solonoid to crank the engine. Find the one that doesn't have power when it should, and trace it back to the switch. You should find the problem by doing this.
Glad to help you, good luck!!!

if it was the neutral switch it would start in all gears. I had a few gm cars that had a bad wire on the starter. The small one that goes to the s side is a fuse and when broken the car wont start like you said.Cut it out as far back as you can and splice a new wire in that should cure the problem

At the starter solenoid is a purple wire that is bolted to the "S " terminal of the starter. Since the starter works as evidenced by you shorting the terminals the next logical step is to insure that you have 12 volts to this terminal in the "start" position. If there is no power there in the start position then you'll have to trace the circuit back. I believe the neutral safety switch is mounted at the gear shift lever beneath the console. One other check is to make sure the large battery wire is properly tightened at the starter and that the battery itself is in a good state of charge.

This model was equipped with the passkey system from gm. It needs to have the new key reprogrammed to match the passkey module. Can only be done with proper scanner equipment etc. If you changed the ignition switch or used a different key this is where problem started.

When you say ignition switch, did you change the key cylinder or the actual switch on the column?

My guess is the switch on the column broke, and it is "hot" while you are jumping the solonoid, but when you remove the arc, then the switch is actually in the off position.
but before that, did you check the fuse, and fusible link?
Check that by checking continuity at the starter.

Good luck with it

Sounds like bad battery cable contacts. Turn the dome light on, then try to start the car. If the dome light goes out, you have a bad battery cable connection, usually at the battery.

sounds like the alterantor or a severe wiring problem have you done a system check.. if not i recomend that. autozones will not give you enough detail either go to a dealership or purchase one yourself.. but the 50-100 bucks could be worth the check so that you are not constantly dropping more cash into unnessesary parts and such.. good luck

double check that ignition switch...................with the key in the run position [not the start position].......check for power to ignition......................if not...check primary wire from ign, switch to coil/distributor........if yes....read on.....have someone hold the key in the start position.........double check ign, primary wire....still hot? if not ...bad switch......if yes....read on.....now check primary wire from ign, switch to solenoid....should be hot..[still holding in start position]..if not....check neutral safety switch,,,make sure you have power into the ign, switch from the battery.
