What do I do after the first step? It would be a very simple divorce because we have no children or assets. I was interested in a very quick and cheap divorce. I have tried to save my marriage but its not working.

I live in Massachusetts

I think the first step would be marriage counseling if there is anything to save. If not, I am in Illinois and you can go to the circuit clerks office and file a no contest divorce. That means you have everything settled and both parties agree. You both have to sign and you may have to pay a filing fee.

I beleive you can get a quickee divorce in Punta cana-Dominican Republic..plus you can have a blast there too as it is the HOT place to go in the Carribean....fun in the sun! I am a travel agent if you need help on that front....

On a more serious note though....You have taken a hugeeee step and it takes a lot of courage to do that...Ive been in a lonely unfullfilling marriage for years and many times I have known I need to get out of it but Ive stayed because of the kids..Know you are going to be okay eventually and it is okay right now to cry and ask for help from friends..Keep busy and hire a good lawyer if you think you will need one but Dominican republic is fast and cheap and stringless for the most part..Just get a passport first though....Here is a link:

Cheer up :) you did the hard part......

The first step is telling yourself you want a divorce, and then list the reasons. Reasons for divorce include abuse, neglect, alcoholism/drug addiction, adultery, impotence, insanity and general incompatibility. There are probably some others, but fighting in court about a divorce is messy and painful. It's much better to come to an agreement before you even file papers. Divorces done this way are cheap and easy, like you said you want.

Go to an attorney. If you don't know one, contact the Massachusetts Bar Association, and they will give you the names of several near where you live. It sounds like you will have a "No Fault" divorce, with the grounds of "irretrievable breakdown." Most attorneys will get through this very quickly, and inexpensively. If your husband cooperates it will be a short time, and it will be over.

Do it yourself and get a one signature divorce. You go to your county clerks office and get a booklet to do it yourself. It takes you step by step and gives you all the paperwork you'll need to file the petitions and it tells you how much everything is as you do it. It costs around $375-$400 but it's not all due at once, you pay for things separate(petitions, legal papers, ect). It's very easy and you don't have to wait for their signature, you just file it, he will get copies served, then wait 60-90 days for a judge to send it back signed.

You can see a lawyer or you can get a do it yourself divorce kit, before you can file in some states it requires a waiting period depending on the circumstances surrounding the divorce.
