Now that so many of the aristocracy have been barred from their hereditery seats in Lords, what is the line that seperates the Upper Class from the Upper Middle-Class or what is increasingly being called the Professional/Managerial Class.

We live in a meritocracy?
Holy crap. If I drop a 20 dollar bill on the ground there are lots of people who will just pick it up and give it to you, but I wouldn't suggest that that's supposedly how we live. And generating a meritocracy from even ONE person toward others is far more difficult than placing a fugitive 20 dollar bill quickly to its person.
Someone in the Upper Class has enough wealth that they don't have to think about money.
There is variation in the range of wealth within the middle class, but they All need to worry about money to maintain their place in the economic Class.
How's that?

The middle class can be defined as a family unit where mom and pop provide for the family and have most of their needs met and some left over for some fun and luxury. Upper-middle class are richer than middle class, can afford to meet all of the needs of a middle class family and can afford a few of the luxuries of the upper class. They are not upper class but have had a taste of what that life is like - hence the analogy of the 7-series and the 3-series BIMA.

Why do you care? Pursue excellence. Forget class. We are not a class-laden society. The ability to slide between classes is an attribute of being an American. Do what you can and enjoy.
