Well late in his life he said that Black men were the only ones that could solve their problems (meaning Black Americans in general NOT only the black MEN.) Earlier in his career he blamed all of black America's problems on whites. That is what made him so popular with poorly-educated inner-city blacks--he absolved all blame on their lack of education, their alcoholism, their drug dependance on their own poor decision making ability and blamed it all on whitey. It is the White man that brings drugs into your neighborhoods, it's the White man that places the bottle of malt liquor in your hands, it's the White man that fails you in your schools so you cannot pass. This line was repeated ad naseum and blacks who did not want to accept responsibility for their own bad decisions and lack of ambition made him a superstar. However later he began to lay some of the blame on blacks and encouraged them to get an education and stay employed (ala Bill Cosby today) and that was one of the reasons Elijah Muhammad had him assassinated in February of 1965 at the Audobahn Ballroom in New York City.
