hattie mcdaniel for Gone With The Wind

I figured since so many people had answered this question that there'd be no need to say anything. But I see some people have some of their facts mixed up, so just so that there's no confusion, let me clarify some of them:

Hattie McDaniel was the first black person to win an Oscar in any category (she won for Best Supporting Actress). Gone With the Wind - 1939

Sidney Poitier was the first black man to be nominated in the Best Actor category in 1958 for The Defiant Ones, but he didn't win that year. He was, however, also the first black man to win the Best Actor award for 1963's Lillies of the Field.

Dorothy Dandridge was the first black woman to be nominated for Best Actress, but Halle Berry was the first black woman to actually win it. Monster's Ball - 2001

Incidentally, 2001 was especially monumental because it was the first time both the Best Actor and Best Actress awards were won by African Americans. Not only did Halle Berry win, but Denzel Washington also won Best Actor for his role in Training Day.

Hope that helps clear some things up.

1939 Hattie McDaniel- Best Supporting Actress for Gone With the Wind
Then there was a long dry streak until Sidney Poitier won in the 1960's.
Now we are lucky that the Oscars are much more racially diverse.
Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jaime Foxx, Jennifer Hudson etc... all contribute to a broader, more interesting movie theater experience and award season. I am a caucasian woman, but I respect all races.
