I went in 1993 and stayed with my friend in a military base there. Let's see what I can tell you.....

* Almost everyone there speaks english, but it's always good to speak in their language when you can....oh you said German class. Never mind!

* I found both extremes of politeness there. On the one hand, some people were extremely rude and pushy. On the other, I found many did huge favors for complete strangers (like me).

* They respect rules, laws and authority MUCH more than in the U.S. (for better or worse.....). If you're on a tour bus for example and they tell you you can't take sodas, they mean it.

* I found the country to be a lot cleaner and much more environmentally concious than here too.

* Trees all over the place. Trees, trees and more trees. Everything is hidden behind 100 trees.

* You'll find the usual fast food places you know and love....sometimes with some new things on the menu. Often an extra charge for things they give away free here.

* There can be more racism and prejudice than there is here at times.

* As in the rest of Europe as well: more people smoke, more people drink beer and wine, if you want to drink water you buy it bottled, mineral water is very popular.

* What are minor mad manners here (chewing gum or putting elbows on table at dinner) you do NOT want to do there.

* And yes you SHOULD be excited, lots of stuff to see there and a lot of it has been around a LOT longer than our entire country. Beautiful countryside. Take lots of pictures and get to some of the neighboring countries if you can.

Germany is a big place. Where are you going? Big cities? Small towns? Lakes? Sea? Mountains? Germany's got it all. I had a wonderful time. People were very nice and patient with my trying to speak German. Most young people speak at least a little English. Have fun.

Expect bombings veneer schnitzel, and Hitler worshipers, I would much prefer Spain or France but that just me.
