Ice them afterwards. Get 2 ice packs or baggies of ice and lay them on your shins. Then take some form of Ibuprofen to help the swelling. Try shoes with plenty of support and padding underneath the arch. While you are healing, try low impact exercises instead, if you can, like swimming, bicycling, or machines at the gym.

Depends on the type of shin splint:
Anterior Shin Splint:
-Ice before and after activity helps to reduce the swelling of the muscle.
-Oral or topical anti-inflammatories will also reduce muscle swelling.
-Compression of the lower leg with an adjustable wrap can control swelling.
-Physical therapy to include range of motion exercises, deep tissue massage and ultrasound if possible.
-As a last resort, rest is helpful but never a final solution. Rest can be as simple as a decrease in activity, a walking cast or even a cast with crutches.
Posterior Shin Splint:
-Ice before and after activity helps to reduce swelling of the muscle.
-Oral or topical anti-inflammatories will also reduce muscle swelling.
-Support of the tibialis posterior can be accomplished with dynamic bracing.
-Physical therapy to include range of motion exercises, deep tissue massage and ultrasound if possible.
-As a last resort, rest is helpful but never a final solution. Rest can be as simple as a decrease in activity, a walking cast or even a cast with crutches.

The cause of shin splints is where you need to go. Generally if a chiropractor can adjust your to relieve the underlying problem they could go way.
