What an idea! Sure, OK, but then, you are creating a false pool of voters. People who don't know in which direction they should turn will be easily led by others...
and then we have a lot of uninformed people ticking off our future.
The worst part of this is, we wouldn't even need to worry about people buying others' votes- all someone needs is to be led, not paid! Suddenly, campaigning would be ONLY about image, and not AT ALL about the issues. I mean, at least the people who vote give some kind of reason, in at least 5 % of the cases...

What an interesting concept! Seriously!
But then, this would mean that those who are really in control of the country, (not the pres), would have to abide by the peoples choice. The Electoral College would be without value. The Trilateral Commission would be unable to control the money of the world.
The people whould actually choose a leader!!! Could the people of the USA actually elect someone who could run this country??? Responsibly? With devotion? Someone who is not corrupt?
While I have a great faith in the people of the USA, I doubt that fining someone for not taking part in an election would be of much use.
Non-the-less, it is a heck of an idea!

Actually...NOT voting is also a choice. I know many people who do not vote because they do not like any of the individuals running. More and more people are basically opting out....rather than choosing the lesser of two evils. Really we ought to have a provision for this ! If enough people refuse to vote ( or check the "opt out " box ) then we should dump the candidates and find some new ones that more people approve of ! ( just a thought ;)

No. It is a choice whether or not your want to participate in choosing the leadership of our country. There are some people out there who I wouldn't want making decisions for me. If they are too lazy or have no desire, forcing them to vote or be fined would just cause random ballot marking.

I do not believe you should fine Americans who do not vote but i do believe that if you DO NOT VOTE, then you SHOULD NOT COMPLAIN about what happens and you should not be allowed to have a say or even protest an issue if you do not vote.

No. Voting is a choice.
However, the people who chose not to vote have no right to complain if the current government isn't doing a good job. They chose not to care, so they have to live with it.

No, but I think that somebody should go to jail for the candidates that they give us to vote for. That's why I usually vote third party.
